Levamisole Injectable Solution
Used in veterinary medicine

Active ingredients (per 1 ml):

  • Levamisole hydrochloride – 75 mg

Excipients: Trilon B, sodium metabisulfite, sodium citrate, chloretone, citric acid (30% aqueous solution, pH 3–4.5), water for injection up to 1 ml.

Description: Colorless or slightly yellowish transparent liquid.

Dosage forms: 10 ml, 20 ml, 50 ml, 100 ml in orange glass vials.

Pharmacological properties

Levamisole belongs to the imidazothiazole group of anthelmintics. It has a broad-spectrum nematocidal action. Active against larvae and mature stages of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes, including:

  • Cattle & small ruminants: Haemonchus spp., Ostertagia spp., Trichostrongylus spp., Nematodirus spp., Bunostomum spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Cooperia spp.

  • Swine: Ascaris spp., Strongyloides spp., Metastrongylus spp., Oesophagostomum spp.

  • Dogs: Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala

Mechanism of action: acts on the nervous-muscular system of helminths, inhibits enzyme activity, leading to paralysis and death of the parasite.
Toxicity: moderately toxic; well tolerated at therapeutic doses; does not exhibit mutagenic, embryotoxic, or sensitizing effects.

Pharmacokinetics: After parenteral administration, levamisole is rapidly absorbed and reaches peak tissue concentration within 30–50 minutes. Therapeutic levels are maintained for 6–9 hours. Excretion occurs within 3–4 days, mainly via urine and partly via feces.


Indications for use

  • Cattle, sheep, goats: dictyocaulosis, haemonchosis, bunostomosis, oesophagostomosis, nematodiriasis, ostertagiasis, cooperiosis, strongyloidosis.

  • Swine: ascariasis, oesophagostomosis, strongyloidosis, trichocephalosis, hyostrongylosis, metastrongylosis.

  • Dogs: toxocarosis, toxascaridosis, uncinariosis, ancylostomosis.


Dosage and administration

  • Cattle: intramuscularly or subcutaneously, 1 ml per 10 kg body weight, single administration. Maximum dose 30 ml for animals >300 kg.

  • Sheep, goats: intramuscularly or subcutaneously, 1 ml per 10 kg body weight, single administration. Maximum dose 4.5 ml for animals >65 kg.

  • Pigs: intramuscularly or subcutaneously, 1 ml per 10 kg body weight, single administration. Maximum dose 20 ml for animals >150 kg.

  • Dogs: intramuscularly or subcutaneously, 1 ml per 10 kg body weight, single administration.


Contraindications

  • Not recommended in the last 3 months of pregnancy.

  • Do not administer to young animals under 10 kg body weight.


Withdrawal period

  • Meat: 7 days

  • Milk: 2 days


Storage conditions

Store in a dry, light-protected place at ≤25°C.
